Disability Services

Lighthouse Christian College (LCC) is committed to providing qualified students with disabilities equal access to its educational programs and services. Consistent with our Christian mission, we seek to treat each student with dignity, respect, and care.

As an online college, LCC works with students to identify appropriate academic adjustments, reasonable modifications, and auxiliary aids and services that support access to online learning. LCC reviews requests individually based on students’ needs and the essential requirements of the course or program.

Who May Request Services

Students with disabilities that affect their access to learning may request assistance. These may include physical, sensory, learning, intellectual, psychological, or chronic health disabilities. Students who are unsure whether their circumstances qualify are encouraged to contact the designated coordinator to discuss their needs.

Disclosure of a disability is voluntary. Students seeking disability-related accommodations should contact the coordinator to begin the request process.

How To Request Accommodations

  1. Contact the coordinator. Use the contact information below to explain that you would like to request disability-related accommodations.
  2. Discuss your access needs. Describe the barriers you are experiencing or expect to experience in your online courses.
  3. Provide documentation when needed. The coordinator will explain whether supporting documentation is necessary and how to submit it securely.
  4. Participate in an individual review. LCC will work with you to identify appropriate accommodations based on your needs and course requirements.
  5. Arrange implementation. The coordinator will explain approved accommodations and how they will be communicated to the instructors or staff responsible for providing them.

Students are encouraged to request accommodations as early as possible because some services require preparation. You may submit requests at any time, including when a disability develops, or circumstances change during a term.

Accommodations In Online Courses

Depending on individual needs, appropriate accommodations may include:

  • Extended time on timed quizzes or examinations.
  • Accessible electronic documents or alternative formats for course materials.
  • Captions, transcripts, or other appropriate access to audio and video content.
  • Support for access through screen readers or other assistive technology.
  • Adjustments to assessment methods or course participation procedures when appropriate.
  • Other auxiliary aids, services, or modifications necessary for equal access.

These examples do not guarantee a particular accommodation or limit the requests students may make. LCC determines appropriate accommodations through an individual review and discussion with the student. LCC may offer an effective alternative when appropriate.

Accommodations provide access while preserving essential academic requirements and learning outcomes. Students remain responsible for meeting those requirements with approved accommodations.

Supporting Documentation

LCC may request reasonable documentation to understand a disability’s effect on access and determine appropriate accommodations. Documentation requirements depend on the circumstances.

Students may submit information about accommodations previously received, including an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 plan. Additional information may be needed to determine appropriate college accommodations.

Contact the coordinator before sending medical or diagnostic records. The coordinator will provide instructions for secure submission. Students should not post disability documentation in discussion boards, assignments, or other shared course spaces.

Privacy

Disability-related information is handled in accordance with applicable privacy requirements. We share information only with individuals who have a legitimate educational need to know. Instructors generally receive information about approved accommodations and implementation, not a student’s medical or diagnostic records.

Report An Online Accessibility Barrier

If you encounter difficulty accessing Populi, a course document, video, assessment, or another required online resource because of a disability, contact the coordinator promptly.

Please identify the course or resource, describe the barrier, and provide the relevant link or assignment name when possible. LCC will work with you to address the concern and arrange appropriate access.

Students who cannot use the usual request process may contact the coordinator by telephone or email for assistance.

Questions, Concerns, And Appeals

If an approved accommodation is not working or has not been implemented, contact the coordinator promptly so the concern can be reviewed.

Students who disagree with an accommodation decision or believe they have experienced disability discrimination may use LCC’s Disability Accommodation, Appeal and Grievance Procedure, please review pages 42— 45 in the College Catalog or contact Mrs. Magallanes.

Students may raise concerns or request accommodations without retaliation.
